Gov’t Shall Not Pay Utility Bills For Teacher Trainees – Education Minister

Teacher Trainees in the public Colleges of Education shall not benefit from government’s intervention regarding the payment of their utility bills. This revelation was made by the Minister of Education, Mathew Opoku Prempeh during a stakeholders meeting held on April 12,2017,at the conference room of the Education Ministry. The meeting was held between the Education Ministry comprising the Minister of Education, his deputy, Chief Director of Education, the Director General of Education and the leadership of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana. According to the Education Minister, he held an earlier meeting with the leadership of the conference of principals. In that meeting, the Principals decided that Feeding grant and Utility bills should be deducted at source from the students allowances when restored in September. Meanwhile, in an earlier meeting between the leadership of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana and the Education Ministry which was held in March 2017,the Chief director of Education stated emphatically that Utilities would not be paid by Students. Also, the New Patriotic Party in its 2016 manifesto, stated that Students in all public institutions shall not pay Utility Bills should the party come to power in January 2017. These statements contradict the Education Minister’s earlier decision that trainees should pay    utility Bills. When the attention of the minister was drawn to the promise made by the NPP, he said, ”Do You Expect Us to Pay You Allowances and at the same time Pay Your Utility Bills? ” This statement had shown clearly that Teacher Trainees  shall continue to pay Utility Bills .
