The University of Ghana Computing Systems is rumored to have extremely limited the bandwidth to many websites particularly the video sharing network – YouTube which was announced earlier this semester with many unannounced.
Since Friday, checks by LegonConnect indicates that students who are connected to the ‘STUDENT’ network of the WiFi are unable to do a lot with it. Currently, one is unable to download pictures, videos, document files, send pictures, view display photos, cannot view WhatsApp photo and video statuses as well as the inability to download apps from Google play and other app stores during the daytime.
It is unclear whether this has been officially sanctioned by management through UGCS or it is part of a wider network failure but the truth is students are not able to use the WiFi for the above mentioned services whilst connected to the ‘STUDENT’ network of the WiFi.
Earlier this semester, there was an announcement to the effect that the bandwidth to YouTube had been closed from 8 am and 5 pm during weekdays for both students and faculty members, even though there was a resistance to it from students in particular, the decision was not reversed.
In relation to this, a petition has been generated online soliciting for signatures to be sent to the Vice Chancellor of the University to deal with this as students are reeling under intense pressure as exams approaches and the services of the WiFi which they have paid for is really needed.
