A student led Think Tank based in the University of Ghana has filed a suit at the SRC Judicial Board seeking interpretation of Article 22(1)(a) of the SRC constitution in relation to the appointment of Mr. Jonathan Alua as SRC Legal Advisor.
In the statement of case sighted by LegonConnect, The think tank suing through its president Daniel Amewor noted that “the purported appointment of Mr. Alua Jonathan Abotiwine as SRC Legal Advisor was done contrary to the the provisions of the SRC constitution and as such null and void and of no effect whatsoever” and prayed the student court to upheld same.
Last month, at the first sitting of the SRC General Assembly, the SRC executives nominated Mr. Jonathan Alua, a final year Post First Degree Law student of the University of Ghana as the Legal Advisor of the SRC, an appointment LOPA has described as illegal because to them, as per the constitution of the SRC, students appointed to that office, should be undergraduates and if Post First Degree Law students, must have undertaken their undergraduate studies here as per Article 22(1)(a) of the SRC constitution.
LOPA early on petitioned the leadership of the General Assembly but did not succeed because the appointment had already been approved by the Assembly hence the need for the Judicial Board to interpret since its clothed with the mandate to do so.
Mr. Jonathan Alua undertook his undergraduate studies at the University of Mines and Technology where he even aspired to become the SRC president. It is unclear when the hearing of the case will take place but LegonConnect will keep readers posted as to new developments.
