GIALS Programmes
Postgraduate study in Law at Ghana Institute of Advanced Legal Studies
- Master of Laws (LLM) Degree, University of London
GIALS offers teaching towards the degree of Master of Laws of the University of London. This higher degree is open to those who have successfully completed the LLB degree. It provides opportunities to study important specialised areas beyond the scope of the undergraduate law degree. The LLM is particularly attractive to law graduates who pursue or intend to pursue an academic career and those who practise or intend to practise as lawyers in a particular field and who wish to have a firm academic grounding upon which to build their practical skills.
Structure and Content
The LLM degree consists of four courses. Specialisations for which we provide teaching and support include:
- International business law
- Common law
- International criminal justice
- Maritime law
- Medicine and the law
- Law and development
Duration
Two academic years, full time, commencing in October of each year.
Students are to take examinations in two courses in the first academic year and two courses in the second year. Thereafter students who intend to follow an academic career will write dissertations on topics to be agreed with their supervisors.
Entry Requirements
A good honours degree in law or equivalent qualification.

It is important to note that all students who apply to do the LLM degree course must be registered with the University of London International Programmes.
Curriculum & Course Design For Ghana Institute of Advanced Legal Studies
GIALS is always ready to consider the provision of special training courses to meet the particular needs of lawyers and managers both in Ghana and Overseas.
Research services
GIALS will provide research services to legal practitioners and judges to enhance legal practice and judicial work.
Public Engagement
In pursuance of its vision to contribute towards development and modernisation of legal education in Ghana, GIALS will also promote awareness of the value of the legal system through its support of a programme of public engagement. It will provide study materials and posters for use by other agencies, colleges and schools to contribute towards education for citizenship.
