HND CIVIL ENGINEERING PROGRAMME
The Department of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering was established in 1993 as part of the then Department of Building and Civil Engineering. The purpose of the HND Civil Engineering Programme is to train middle-level management personnel to provide the needed supervisory role to link theory and practice in the civil engineering and construction industry.
The Department was decoupled from the Department of Building Technology in 2007 and has since been known as the Department of Civil Engineering.
- To achieve this aim the following objectives among others are pursued:
- To assist trainees (students) improve upon and strengthen their backgrounds in general education
and in the engineering field;
- To provide opportunities for trainees to develop essential knowledge and skills in
communication, computing and information technology.
- To assist trainees to acquire knowledge and skills in specific areas as they apply to the civil engineering industry such as Site inspection, Surveying, Material testing, Contract administration and execution, Civil Engineering Analysis and Design, Management of construction activities and environmental impact, Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation, Road Maintenance and Transportation.
- To develop trainees entrepreneurial and management skills in order to encourage them to enter
into small scale construction enterprises to expand the private sector.
Over the years, the programme has seen growth in student numbers and running of part-time HND in Civil Engineering. The quality of our programme has attracted students all over Africa especially Nigeria, The Gambia, Senegal, Togo, Gabon, Mali and Burkina Faso. As part of the requirement of the award of the HND Civil Engineering Certificate, students are expected to conduct a research project and produce a report on their 3-year studies which helps in determining the quality of students sent to the world of works.
Nonetheless, the department also employs competency-based training which ensures that graduates have the skills to perform all engineering duties with no or minimal supervision. Students are introduced and taught to solve complex real-world problems through problem-based learning (PBL) techniques like case studies, role-playing and simulation are used extensively to develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities and communication skills. The programme also requires students a minimum of three months of industrial attachment/the internship which helps them to develop practical skills in Civil Engineering as well as its associated attributes such as ethical values, tacit-knowledge, aptitude and stamina.
2-YEAR BTECH CIVIL ENGINEERING PROGRAMME
The 2-year Bachelor of Technology (Btech) programme in Civil Engineering is a two-year programme of four semesters. Due to contemporary changes in technology, there is the need to upgrade the HND graduates and their technical equivalent to face the growing challenges being experienced in the industry. The main objectives of the B-Tech (civil engineering) programme are to further strengthen and increase the competencies of construction staff, to meet the demands for highly qualified personnel needed for the country’s socio-economic and manpower development. It will also enhance the progression in the education of HND graduates in civil engineering and their membership acceptance into professional bodies. The introduction of this programme will pave the way for the M-Tech degree programme in civil engineering in the near future.
The graduate Civil Engineer shall be suitable for employment in the Government and Public agencies involved in the construction and consultancy services such as Ghana Highway Authority, Department of Urban Roads, Department of Feeder Roads, Architectural and Engineering Services Ltd, Public Works Department, the District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies as well as private consulting and construction firms; Teaching and Research in 2nd and 3rd cycle institutions, Petroleum Industry, Financial and Banking Sectors, NGO’s and Self Employment.
