Refurbished Snooker Table

The newly refurbished snooker and billiards table was commissioned at the Senior Staff Club House on 16th May, 2017.

Rev. Prof. Charles Ansah, the Pro-Vice Chancellor, was excited about the new development. He mentioned that in times past, the Senior Staff Club House was a place of relaxation after a hard day’s work and where important University decisions were taken. He hoped that staff would be trained by experts to play the game and revive the activities of the Staff Club House.

Dr. Vincent Dodoo, a member of the Snooker and Billiards Club, stated that the Snooker and Billiards Club was one of the dynamic engines of entertainment at the Senior Staff Club with links to all the snooker and billiards clubs in the country. These include Ghana Club, Lebanon Club, Tesano Club, Kumasi Club, Konongo Club and Obuasi Club.

He continued that the Snooker and Billiards Club of the then UST was a vibrant and lively society within the Senior Staff Club. They entertained themselves with the games but also learnt a lot about the workings of the university and academic life in general. Dr. Dodoo noted that the original idea behind the building of the Senior Staff Complex was to have academics and senior administrators from the various faculties and departments to congregate at one point and share ideas beyond the departments and that objective was very much realized at the snooker and billiards table.

The Snooker and Billiards Club of UST began to collapse when prominent members retired from the service of the University and relocated. The table ceased to receive regular maintenance attention and therefore entered a period of deterioration. The director of sports expressed interest in having the table rehabilitated so that the Sports Directorate could also use it. Mr. John Marmon-Halm and Dr. Dodoo took inventory of what was needed and paid for the materials and had the table refurbished.

Dr. Dodoo called on the Vice-Chancellor to insist on the proper use of the Senior Staff Club as a facility for senior members of the University.

The snooker and billiards table belonged to the now defunct Billiards and Snooker Club of UST/KNUST.  It was the same table which was moved from the original Senior Staff Club at the old site near the Commercial Area to the new complex.

Notable members of the Club included Prof. George Lutterodt, Ablade Glover, Frank Kwami, Jerry Blankson, M.A. Kwamena-Poh, W.N. Laing, Albert Ahafia, K.G. Adanu, Francis Addo Kufour, Colonel Bonsu and R. Bannerman-Bruce.
