North West University Nuclear Engineering South Africa
North West University Nuclear Engineering South Africa, Welcome to the School of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. Our exciting profession is at the forefront of transformational innovations. The Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering programme maintains a good balance between training in the basic sciences, engineering science and design. Great emphasis is placed on creative design, in order to enable engineers to apply their knowledge in finding solutions for complicated problems.
We are grateful for your interest in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering and we invite you to explore our academic programmes, student activities, and research pursuits.
Post Graduate School for Nuclear Science and Engineering
As the first university in South Africa to be awarded a chair in Nuclear Engineering by the Department of Science and Technology, the North-West University is well positioned to provide high-quality, industry-specific training and education.
The worldwide focus on energy security and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has brought on a renewed interest in nuclear power as an alternative energy source. Some two decades of low activity in the field of nuclear power has resulted in a global nuclear skills shortage, due to an aging worker corps and low levels of new entrants to the career. These factors have contributed to a new international trend for tertiary education institutions to collaborate in nuclear education in a number of regional and international networks. The present research arises from a need stated by the Nuclear Industry Association of South Africa to develop the current skills base of nuclear engineers and to transfer and manage nuclear knowledge to upcoming engineers in South Africa.
Mechanical Engineers are involved with the development, manufacturing, management and maintenance of transport, energy conversion, manufacturing, generator, weapon and cooling and heating systems, as well as industry installations, process equipment, manufacturing machinery and mining equipment.
Nuclear Engineers (post grad studies) design systems that utilizes nuclear processes for energy.
Mechanical and nuclear engineering is under the top 3 scarce skills in South Africa.
