Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby has said the Electoral Commission must be commended over the attempt to implement laws governing the establishment of political parties in the country.

The EC has come under attacks from some political parties following its decision to withdraw certificates of political parties without district offices as required by the law. Some have argued the timing is wrong for the commission to embark on such a move.

Some political parties have also threatened they will go to court to seek further clarification of the laws.

Commenting on the matter on News File on Joy FM Saturday, the policy analyst said the EC has done no wrong for seeking to implement the law which has been on the statutory books since 1992.

“This law has been there for so many years. We all complain about having laws and not implementing them. So shouldn’t we be applauding the EC for applying the laws? We are 24 years into the Fourth Republic and someone comes and says I am going to implement the laws and suddenly we are angry?” he wondered.

The EC has written to the parties asking them to show proof of their representation in the various districts or risk the withdrawal of the licenses by the end of May.
