Students of the University of Ghana may now heave a sigh of relief because the SRC says the need has arisen for a reduction in the amounts charged as shuttle fare on campus.
As a result, the council has successfully negotiated a reduction in the shuttle prices of the Road Safety and Transportation Consultancy (RSTC) from GH¢1.00 to GH¢0.80; but via an E-Zwich payment system. The SRC however revealed that is not abandoning the existing payment system but the move is a way the RSTC could monitor its transactions.
The Public Relations Officer of the SRC, Eleazer Fordjour Quayson said “We are not abandoning the existing payment of the physical cash this is just a way the SRC has improvised to ensure that, the management of RSTC are able to make profit. Students would enjoy a reduction of shuttle fares because, the operators of the RSTC buses were complaining that the drivers and conductors were keeping some of the monies for themselves so they were not getting the full benefit of the shuttles they operate on campus that is, why the e-Zwich system which is now going to ensure that monies come directly to them has been introduced”.
He further added that “We can now eighty Ghana pesewas for the shuttle transporting on campus through the e-Zwich card and we’ll be sure that monies will go to them directly or if you pay the one cedi we will know that, if somebody takes some money for himself, still a greater percentage will still go to the management of the shuttle services”.
