Komenda Sugar Factory
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Tano North in the Brong Ahafo region, Freda Prempeh is skeptical about the viability of the new Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central region.
According to her, the funfair associated with the commissioning of the factory is just a ‘propaganda stunt by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for cheap political points ahead of the November 7 general elections.
President John Mahama on Monday May 30 inaugurated the revamped Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region.
The factory, which was established decades ago by the first President of Ghana, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was left to its fate after some technical and operational challenges.
The factory, to be managed by India based company, SEFTECH according to government, is expected to create 7000 jobs.
But government has been under strict scrutiny after it emerged that the sugarcane which is the raw material for the factory is not available for production.
In support, Freda Prempeh on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday said government failed to do due diligence before commissioning the factory.
She stated that just like the Ayensu Starch Factory, Kumasi Shoe Factory and the Pwalugu Tomato Factory, the Komenda Sugar factory will be a white elephant.
The Tano North MP could not fathom why the Mahama-led government did not take its time to ensure the factory works to full capacity to create the needed jobs for the teeming unemployed youth in the country.
“No one is against a factory which will create jobs for the youth but this one.
Freda Prempeh urged government to quit the propaganda and embark on projects that would improve the wellbeing of Ghanaians.
