Is Wassce equivalent to Gcse?, The West African Examinations Council wishes to remind members of the public, especially prospective candidates for the General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE) and tertiary institutions that the GBCE and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) grades are equivalent.
In the past, the GBCE was equivalent to the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (GCE ‘O’ Level) and the Advanced Business Certificate Examination (ABCE) equivalent to the GCE ‘A’ Level. With the abolition of the GCE O/A Level examinations, the GBCE was realigned to the senior high school syllabus. The GBCE syllabus is essentially that of the business programme for the senior high school with a larger number of subjects including English Language, Mathematics (core), Integrated Science and Social Studies.
The Council has drawn the attention of the National Accreditation Board to the equivalence and recommends that candidates should be permitted to combine their GBCE and WASSCE qualifications for tertiary education and employment.
