Graduate students on the Regional Water and Environmental Sanitation Centre, Kumasi (RWESCK), as part of activities to mark World Water Day, have held an outreach programme for pupils of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Basic School.
Graduate students with the support of faculty educated pupils through talks, interactive sessions, animation videos and posters. Graduate students also used set ups to demonstrate water contamination, purification, recycling and upscaling.
Nehemiah Addae Samwini, year group leader of the graduate students, stated that Ghana had issues with handling water and with recent developments of illegal mining (galamsey) activities and upstreaming of water bodies, the water resources students found it necessary to educate the future generation.
Mr. Addae Samwini continued that it was important to start with young people to enlighten them on how to handle water. The pupils were educated on the importance of water, its pollution, the effects of wasting water and how to conserve water.
It has been noted that water produced in commercial quantities packed in sachets and bottles generate a lot of plastic waste and the graduate students explained how plastic can be recycled into other useful products.
The organisers were grateful to the Centre for sponsoring the outreach programme.
