Esinam Shot In The Face! No SRC Week Celebration In UG

The General Assembly of the University of Ghana which is the highest decision making arm of the SRC has voted unanimously to set aside the SRC Week Celebration of the 2016/2017 academic year. The mover of the motion argued that the celebration was a burden on the purse of the SRC.
And that it has become obsolete and lacks relevance in the face of the many Hall Week Celebrations which have almost the same features.
There was a counter motion to that which was advanced by the SRC president herself; Her Excellency Ms. Esinam Afi Seade on the argument that the celebration of the SRC week was an entrenched constitutional provision, As well as the statutes of the University going to certify this ‘fact’.
This came with a heated debate on the floor of the house which led to almost 2 hours being spent on this particular issue.
For now, a legal suit is anticipated from the Front of the SRC executive committee since they advanced the arguments for the celebration of the program using the constitutional provision in the SRC constitution as the main say.
Of the present 58 members, 19 Voted for the setting aside of the SRC Week Celebration and 17 Voted for its celebration. It must be noted however that some others abstained from voting particularly honorable members from the Accra City Campus – and that number was 12.
So in effect, the SRC Week Celebration has been set aside for this Academic year by the General Assembly of the SRC.

Constitutional Provision

The SRC constitution Chapter two (2) clause two (2) provides that “……. the SRC shall celebrate its week which shall fall within the first semester of the Academic year, with the actual date to be fixed by the General Assembly, and where impossible, to be fixed by the Executive Officers in consultation with the Dean of Students Affairs.
It must also be noted however that some money have already been expended in preparation for this celebration with themed flyers produced and a date already fixed with approval from the Dean of Students.
