BACKGROUND/ESTABLISHMENT
 The Department of Secretaryship and Management Studies is one of the three departments under the School of Business and Management Studies.  It was established some twenty two years ago (1986) to offer the Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) secretarial option. This was as a result of there not being any Institution in the Central Region to offer such programmes. With time, the NACVET programmes consisting of Stenography up to Private Secretary were also run by the Department.  From 1994/95 academic year, the first batch of students were enrolled to undertake a Higher National Diploma in Secretaryship and Management Studies.
 
PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
In the search for inteational competitiveness, management skills and vision are vital to the success of all organizations.  The HND Secretaryship and Management Studies programme teaches students to Establish a good working environment that allows staff to develop and work effectively, understand organizational change, Critically assess management ideas, combine management skills with “technical”  business competence in areas such as marketing, information systems, accounting or tourism, Plan a career and what it takes to move ahead, assert themselves in secretarial skills as well as secretarial practice.
 
The program is designed around several key themes reflecting the challenges you will face as a practicing manager or administrator. These include leadership, change, strategy, globalization, human resource management, ethics and social responsibility and small business management.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The skills you acquire will be applicable to roles in almost any organisation.  Work areas may include, Administration
Project Officers, Company Secretaries,Confidential Secretaries, Private Secretaries, General Management/CEO
Industrial Relations/Unions, Management (academia, human resource, sales, small business, project),Occupational Health and Safety, Performance Management
SPECIAL FEATURES
Develop skills (ICT, Management and Secretarial skills) to become a leader in small business and industry (public, private and non-profit organisations), Gain a diploma that will complement previous studies or work experience in almost any area.
FUTURE PLANS
The Department plans to mount a programme leading to the award of Bachelor’s Degree in Secretaryship and Management Studies, Part-time HND in Secretaryship and eventually Distance Leaing in HND Secretaryship.  The department is ready to organize refresher-training courses for personnel from the Public Service and Metropolitan/Municipal/District Assemblies etc. in its catchment area.  Plans are far advanced in this venture.
The rationale is to: equip the personnel from these offices with current trends in clerical and administrative procedures.
Areas to be studied include, Office Management, Human Relations in Organizations, Organizational Behaviour,Business Communication and Secretarial Duties.  Such courses would also be run for members of the Polytechnic community.
 
FACILITIES
The Department has benefited from a Spanish-sponsored Computer Laboratory.  The Department has also benefited from the Teaching and Leaing Innovation Fund (TALIF) for the setting up of a model office with mode office equipment.  The model office, when completed will afford students the opportunity of becoming familiar with the state-of-the art equipment.

ENTRY REQUIRMENTS (A) ‘A’ Level, RSA and DBS HoLders
* Five(5) GCE ‘O’Level credit passes including English Languages and Mathematics OR
* Four(4) SSSCE/WASSCE passes including English Language and Mathematics OR
* Ghana Commercial Examination Stage II(RSA II) passes in five(5) subjects including English Language and Mathematics
* General Business Certificate(Old Structure) with five(5) passes including English Language and Mathematics
AND EITHER OF THE FOLLOWING:
* Two(2) passes at GCE ‘A’ Level OR
* Ghana Commercial Examination Stage III(RSA Stage III) passes in three subjects OR
* Diploma in Business Studies(DBS) Certificate
* Senior Stenographer Certificate

(B) SHS Graduates and General Business Certificate Holders(New Structure)

* Aggregate of 24 or better including three(3) core scubjects(English Language, Mathematics and any Science subject/ Social Studies) plus any three elective subjects. the elective passes should be in any of the following programmes: General Arts/ Business/Science /Vocational/Agriculture
* Holders of General Business Certificates(New Structure including Socal Studies and Integrated Science)
(C) Teacher Applicants:

* Four-year Certificate ‘A’ OR
* Three-year Post Secondary Teacher’s Certificate AND Five(5) GCE ‘O’ Level credits including English Language and Mathematics OR
* Five(5) SSSCE/WASSCE passes including English Language and Mathematics AND at least a minimum of three(3) years teaching experience.
(D) Mature Applicants:
* Must be at least 30 years old
* Three (3) GCE ‘O’ Level credit passes including English Language OR
* Three (3) SSSCE/WASSCE passes including English Language and Mathematics
* Ghana Commercial Examination Stage II(RSA Stage II) passes in three (3) subjects including English Language and Mathematics OR
* Applicants with Senior Stenography grade may also apply
* Must have the requisite work experience of at least three (3) years
* Should pass a written examination and an interview
* Photocopies of birth certificate and evidence of industrial experience should be attached.
