BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF DEPARTMENT OF                                                  MARKETING  STUDIES (DoMS)

DoMS is one of three departments that constitute the School of Business.  It was initially under the tutelage of Department of Accountancy Studies but became a full fledged Department in 1997.  The Department initially started in 1994/1995 Academic Year with 17 students.  The growth in the number of students has been phenomenal over the years.  The current number of students is 897.

PROGRAMME OF STUDY

DoMS offers HND in MARKETING STUDIES on full time basis.  The Department is ready to start an evening programme on part time basis in Chartered Institute of Banking (Ghana) at levels I and II for workers in the banking sector in Cape Coast and Takoradi. The Department is on the threshold of rolling out a degree in Marketing which will take 15 months for holders of HND in Marketing  Studies.  The four-year programme for Bachelor’s in Marketing Studies will soon commence.

SCOPE OF OPERATIONAL ACTIVITY

Marketing Studies as a discipline is a gourmand and mix of disciplines.  The Department in its teaching ethos and philosophy inculcates in the students the ‘eat all’ approach to learning especially when it comes to the Social and the Behavioural sciences.  The broad areas of activity covered in this respect include the following:
a.Inculcate in students the ability to think objectively and critically to be able to provide solutions to business problems.
b.Provide students with access to a mix of academic and professional training courses.
c.Deliver specialist training and advice to members of the business community country wide.
d.Embark on activities that will strengthen relations with tertiary constitution s of learning as well as organization that support professional education.
e.Provide and promote, on a continuous basis, research in areas that impact on businesses.
f.Provide consultancy services in marketing to businesses especially SMEs in the private sector of the economy where conventional business practices i.e. the ability to provide services promptly is generally lacking.

TEACHING METHODS/STRATEGY

Undergirding our teaching philosophy is to produce graduates who fit properly and fully in the marketing world of business.  Our products should fit adequately and fully the rigorous demands of the marketing profession.  Marketing Studies is all about maximizing results and your results should put you on the pinnacle of any business the company finds itself in.  The students are  grounded in the art of thorough thinking and critical evaluation of business opportunities to ascertain which businesses are worth pursuing.  Coming to terms with what pertains on the ground when it comes to business is a ‘must have’ for our students.

STAFFING LEVEL/COMPETENCY

The impressive growth in student population of DOMMS reflects the absolute or total commitment, zeal and drive of a crop of full-time staff.  There is a mix of academic and professionally qualified, experienced and competent lecturers currently at post.

FUTURE PROSPECTS

Cape Coast Polytechnic happens to be an “institution of choice” for business students in the country.  This is going to continue for a long time.  This means that DoMS is going to attract a large number of students.  A further triggering factor is the about-to-come-on Bachelor of Marketing top-up programme.
All told, the evolving path of DoMS as an integral part of The School of Business Studies of Cape Coast Polytechnic is inspiring.
