Hundreds of students of the Asuom Senior Higth School in the Kwaebibirm District of the Eastern Region have been displaced after fire gutted their dormitory on Sunday morning.The fire comes less than 24 hours after a gas explosion at Atomic Junction in Accra left 7 persons dead with 132 said to be injured.
According to authorities of the school who spoke to mynewsgh.com, the fire started Sunday morning at about 7am when students were at church service, destroying several properties belonging to them.
In all, three rooms were affected by the fire. Properties in one of the rooms were completely burnt.
A teacher of the school who doubles as the assemblyman for the area said he first noticed thick smoke billowing from one of the rooms which is very close to his residence.
According to Abrefa Busia, students were called to help salvage the situation while they waited for personnel of the Ghana fire Service.
He disclosed that when the situation was getting out of hand, students, teachers and good Samaritans had to leave the scene due to the ferocious nature of the fire.
Abrefa Busia said it took several hours for the fire fighters who arrived on time to put out the inferno.
No injuries or causalities have been recorded but the cause of the fire is yet to be known.
