Deputy Black Stars captain Andre Ayew is confident about Ghana’s chances ahead of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, but says they would prefer to stay focused than talking about the tournament.
Ghana endured a series of near misses since their last Afcon title won in Libya in 1982, making it to the semi-finals of the last five editions, including final appearances in 2010 and 2015.
“I have lost the final twice in Angola [2010] and Equatorial Guinea [2015],” Ayew told Metro TV.
“We have six months to the tournament, and we don’t want to talk much. We want to stay focused. Before the tournament comes, there will be a World Cup qualification.
The four-time champions are on a mission to end their long wait and have already qualified for next year’s tournament in Gabon with a game to spare.
“We really need our people behind us for all these. These six months coming will be a very important period. What Ghana wants is to go and win. But from now until then, a lot of things can happen.
“We are not going to talk much; we’re going to work hard. And one thing I can assure Ghanaians is that my colleagues and I will give all what we have to do to bring the trophy home.”
The 2017 Afcon runs between January 14 and February 5.
