The department support and maintains the deployments of the following systems:

  • Student Information System (ITS)
  • Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS)
  • Oracle  Business Intelligence Application (OBIA )
  • Linux Enterprise Systems

The ITS system is used for the functionality of Academic Structure, Student Application and Registration, Class and Examination Timetable Publication, Study Record Maintenance, Graduation and Marketing and Communication.
The Oracle E-Business Suite is used for the functionality of Human Resource Management, the Payroll, Financial modules, Procurement and Inventory.
The newly implemented Oracle Business Intelligence Application formulate part of an integral Information Management and Data Hub obtained from different Source Systems to support decision making for the University of Johannesburg (UJ).
Linux Enterprise systems encompass OS level support for all our Oracle platforms, as well as our High Performance Computer Cluster linked to the Research Grid in South Africa (https://www.sagrid.ac.za)
 

Information Security

 

Information Security is a domain residing within the Information Communication Systems (ICS) Department in the University of Johannesburg (UJ) managing Information Security programs.
The main objectives of the domain are to ensure the following:
  • ​Confidentiality of information
  • Integrity of information
  • Availability of  information systems in a timely manner
MAIN FUNCTIONS ARE:
  1. ​Information Security Policies – Development of the Information Security policies, standards, guidelines and procedures that communicate security requirements and guide the selection and implementation of security control measures within the IT department for the entire University.
  2. Information Security awareness – Training and conducting awareness programs which are intended to ensure that stakeholders (employees and students) utilizing  IT technology  are aware of information security threats.
  3.  Compliance Assurance – Ensures that the University  complies  with and adheres to the IT related laws, rules, codes, standards, guidelines and best practices through implementation and monitoring thereof.
  4. IT Risk Management & Audit – IT Risk & Audit Management ensures that findings and risks are adequately addressed through risk management, monitoring and assurance processes. These processes assist ICS in determining an acceptable level of risk;  taking steps to reduce risk to the acceptable level and maintaining that level of risk.
  5. IT Continuity – Plans are put in place and managed to ensure that IT systems and services can be recovered and continue should a serious incident occur. This also ensures that IT supports the Business Continuity Planning (BCP), in ensuring that the whole end-to-end university IT processes can continue should a serious incident occur.

 

Network and Telephony ​

Networking 
The division of Networking   maintains and supports a reliable, stable, and virus free network environment. Technical staff maintains network security through the administration of network access. Networking administers and maintains the Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN) and wireless network. This division’s responsibilities include setting up and maintaining the network, attending to networking related queries, administering and maintaining the University server environment and maintaining a reliable and secured network wiring topology.
Networking also provides wireless infrastructure within selected academic and administrative buildings as well as student residences. Wireless services are provided for voice and data communication, this is the latest Wi-Fi technology for connection of wireless and mobile computing devices.
Telephony 
The campus Telephony service offering ensures end-to-end delivery of telecommunication services to user departments throughout the University. Delivery of telephony services includes coordination with external support vendors for equipment purchasing and provisioning, coordination with internal service providers for equipment installation, cabling, maintenance of back-end telephone systems and responses to user reported incidents.
The campus Telephony service platform allows for rapid adaptation of communications infrastructure and service offerings to meet operational challenges brought on by customer demand and organizational staffing requirements.
Users are also provided with an array of telephone devices to choose from to meet their specific business needs. IP-based telephones utilize the existing IP data network, along with connections to the existing standard PBX, to connect to a central point for local and long distance calling.
