Public Lecture by SABC Chairman, Mr Bongumusa Makhathini
Mr Chris Schactebeck, Head of the M Com Strategic Management Programme, thanks Mr Makhathini for his lecture.
Addressing students and academics, in a public lecture at the Nadine Gordimer Auditorium in the UJ library, Mr Bongumusa Makhathini, Chairman of the SABC Board and former UJ student, shared an exciting new perspective for South Africa as an emerging country.
In his address entitled: “Leap frog economies – why emerge, when you can surpass?”, Makhathini said that Africa can learn from current challenges faced, and by using the latest technologies and theories, the continent can choose its own destination. Through inclusivity, engagement and contextualization, Makhatini believes that Africa, and in particular South Africa, need not follow the proven, linear or “correct” path to development, and instead of imposing the Western beliefs on employees, customers and other stakeholders, business should think along the lines of a sustainable business model in an African context. This would entail bringing communities and customers along on the business’ journey to success (inclusivity), treating stakeholders as partners (engagement) and developing a brand strategy in the African context. The public lecture was well attended by students and lecturers.
