The University of Health and Allied Sciences school of nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) is one of the foundation schools of the University of Health and Allied Sciences which was established as a public university in 2012 to train health professionals.
SONAM started with fifty-nine (59) students made up of twenty-nine (29) midwifery students and thirty (30) nursing students in the 2012/2013 academic year, but this number has increased with an additional one hundred and twenty-four (124) first year students (Level 100) and thirty (30) top-up (Level 300) students joining the School during the 2013/2014 academic year.
Total enrollment now stands at two hundred and thirteen (213) students making it the biggest School in terms of student numbers.
The School is endowed with seasoned teaching staff with vast experience in Nursing and Midwifery Education and Training coupled with forty six (46) SONAM trained preceptors located at the various clinical sites to teach and supervise students during vocational training.
The School has submitted for approval and accreditation, the curricula for both the Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery programmes.
Collaborations with other Universities are at various levels of discussion.
 
Local Applicants
Science Students – WASSCE/SSSCE : Passes (A1-C6 / A-D) respectively in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects:

  • English
  • Core Mathematics
  • Integrated Science

In addition, applicants must have obtained three (3) credits in the following Elective Subjects:
Chemistry, Physics and Biology / Elective Mathematics.
 
Non-Science Students – WASSCE/SSSCE  may apply for admission into the School of Nursing and Midwifery or School of Public Health with the following qualifications :

  • Passes (A1-C5 / A-D) respectively in Integrated Science in addition to credit passes comprising three (3) core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Social Studies plus three (3) elective subjects.

 
NB:

  • Entry Requirements for WASSCE Applicants into programmes of University of Health and Allied Sciences school of nursing and Midwifery – Bachelor of Midwifery

     Applicants must possess at least credits (C6) in

  1. English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies
  2. Three (3) elective subjects from:
  1. Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Elective Mathematics,
    Or
  2. Economics, Geography, Elective Mathematics, Government, History, Christian Religious Studies or Islamic Religious Studies, Literature-in-Literature and French,
    Or
  3. Chemistry, General Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Elective Mathematics.
