THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST
Location: The UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST, GHANA, is
one of the rare sea-front Universities in the World. Its
main entrance is only about 50 meters from the Atlantic
Ocean. It is strategically located along the shores of the
Gulf of Guinea, midway between the famous Cape Coast
Castle, the first seat of the British Government until
1879 and the Elmina Castle, the first point of call of the
first European merchants to the Gold Coast in 1847.
Mission: The University was established in 1962
originally to train graduate professional teachers for
Ghana’s second cycle institutions as well as the Ministry
of Education. Today, in addition to the above, the
University offers a wide range of academic programmes
in the Arts, Education, Social Sciences, Sciences,
Business, Agriculture and Medicine.
Vision: The vision of the University is to become a
Centre of Excellence in Africa and the world for human
resource and entrepreneurship development in
education and related sectors.
Academic Programmes: The academic programmes of
the University are vested in its eight Faculties/Schools.
The Faculties of Arts, Education, Social Sciences and the
Schools of Agriculture, Business, Physical, Biological and
Medical Sciences. The Faculties/Schools are each
headed by a Dean and are sub-divided into Academic
Departments, Institutes and Centres. There are also an
Academic Quality Assurance Unit (AQAU) and a
Professional Counselling Centre. The Departments also
offer academic counselling to students. All together,
over 60 academic programmes are mounted each year
at the Diploma, Bachelor, Master’s and Doctorate levels.
Library Facilities: The University has an ultramodern
library complex. It has capacity for stocking
about 750,000 volumes as well as a seating capacity for
2000 readers. In addition to the E-mail and Internet, the
Library also has an Inter-Library Loan and Document
Delivery facility (ILL/DD).
Student Enrolment: Student enrolment is about
17,000 and includes foreign students.
Halls of Residence: Currently, the University has limited
accommodation in six halls of residence namely, Adehye
(Females only), Casely-Hayford (Males only), Oguaa,
Atlantic, Valco and the Kwame Nkrumah Hall (Mixed).
Medical Services: There is a University Health
Services which is headed by a Director of Health
Services. Currently, the hospital has a 33-bed capacity
with an Out-Patient Department (OPD) capable of
attending to over 300 patients daily. There is also an
Environmental Health Services Unit which deals with
general sanitation on the campus.
Places of Interest: In addition to a lovely beach along
the Atlantic ocean, there are the following places of
interest.
