MUT Engineering

MUT Engineering, It is now more that 30 years since Mangosuthu Technikon now Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) started offering National Diploma Engineering programmes. Over these years there have been significant improvements in the content and quality of these programmes, which include: Chemical, Civil, Surveying, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering, with each one running a bridging programme. The Chemical Engineering Department has been offering a B. Technology degree for almost 10 years.

There has also been an increasing focus on research capacity development. Presently the Faculty of Engineering is active in the following areas:

  • Water research
  • Renewable energy
  • Wind energy
  • Intelligent control
  • Road safety

The Faculty is working hard to ensure that there is greater research collaboration with industry and other tertiary institutions and organisations.

Another area that the Faculty is focusing on is SMME (small, micro and medium enterprise) development. Through the Department of Science and Technology initiated Technology Stations Programme, the Faculty of Engineering, collaborating with the Faculty of Natural Sciences, has done sterling work in technology transfer to SMMEs manufacturing chemicals.

A snap shot of MUT qualification

Engineering programmes are about the design and production of useful products and services. Engineers convert scientific knowledge into technology and then technology into successful advancement. At MUT we offer the National Diplomas in Chemical, Civil, Surveying, Electrical, Building (Construction Management & Quantity Surveying), and Mechancial Engineering.  We also offer a Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering.

The faculty of Engineering also offers access (bridging programmes) designed to prepare students who could not fulfill all the diploma entrance requirements.

Career opportunities

National Diploma: Chemical Engineering

The course trains students to be technicians qualified to assist a chemical engineer or plant operator in the control, maintenance and functioning of processes involved in the production of chemicals. The technician’s duties include research, economic evaluation and unit operations.

National Diploma: Civil Engineering

The course qualifies the technician for employment with civil engineering contractors, consultants, Government departments or municipalities, where he/she would form part of a team usually managed by a professional engineer or technologist. The techniciancould be involved in the design and construction of civil engineering structures such as roads, bridges, dams, railways, harbours, buildings and airports.

National Diploma: Surveying

Scaled base maps are essential to any construction planning or development of land. The course qualifies the student as a surveyor who has the ability to prepare maps of various scales set out for the required structures, transportation routes, industrial and residential properties.

National Diploma: Construction Management & Quantity Surveying (Building)

After completing the course students specialise in either construction management or quantity surveying. The course provides essential skills and knowledge needed in the construction of housing, schools, community facilities and other building projects.

National Diploma: Electrical Engineering

The course equips the students with the knowledge and skills needed for working in electrical power generation and distribution environments, process control environments and electronic communication environments. The course may include design, development and work on computer-based systems.

National Diploma:  Mechanical Engineering

The diploma qualifies students for a wide range of occupations. There are employment opportunities in the manufacturing industry, motor industry, ship building industry, aircraft industry, at power stations and on the mines.
