Geological Engineering In University of Mines and Technology UMaT
The Department of Geological Engineering is one of the academic departments under the Faculty of Mineral Resources Technology. The Department offers a four-year undergraduate Bachelor of Science programme in Geological Engineering and a two-year Diploma programme in General Drilling. Postgraduate modular MSc and MPhil programmes in Geological Engineering are offered on full time and part time basis for two and three year durations respectively. PhD programme is also offered on both full-time and part-time basis for three years and four years respectively. The Department, apart from teaching is actively involved in research, consultancy and extension services. Cooperation with industry was strengthened and as a result a rig has been received from Goldfields Ghana Limited for the Drilling Section of the Department. The Department completed the review process for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in 2016.
I wish to also extend a congenial invitation to all our students to participate in the activities of the Association of Geological Engineering and General Drilling Students (AGES) – a platform for our students to demonstrate their leadership and organisational skills.
The Geological Engineering programme started in 1961, when the government, upon the advocacy of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, redefined the mission of the then Tarkwa Technical Institute (TTI) to incorporate the training of geological technicians and other middle level manpower for the country’s mining and allied industries. The programme has developed through Certificate, Diploma to Degree levels. The programme has produced competent personnel for mineral exploration, mining, groundwater, oil and allied industries within and outside the country.
