 GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS WITH     WASSCE/SSSCE AND OTHER FOREIGN QUALIFICATIONS

 

  1. 1.     Duration of Programmes

With the exception of The Bachelor of Laws (LLB), Bachelor of Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programmes, all first degree programmes of study are of four (4) years duration.
The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme may be followed by a-two year professional course at the Ghana School of Law.
The Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programmes may be followed by a three-year clinical programme for the DBS and the MB. ChB Degree.
The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is a straight six-year programme.
 
2.     University of Ghana Campuses
The University’s teaching and research is carried out across four (4) campuses, namely:

  1. a.     Legon (Main) Campus

The Legon Campus, which is the main campus, is located 13 kilometers northeast of Accra. This campus houses the central administration and all the university halls and hostels (both university owned and privately owned.  The main campus houses all foreign students and Ghanaians admitted into programmes on the main campus.

  1. b.    Accra City Campus

The Accra City Campus is located within the Central Business District of Accra. Currently, the campus offers on full time basis, two (2) programmes which are also offered on the main campus. These are:

  • The Bachelor of Science in Administration programme
  • The Bachelor of Arts programme

All regular Diploma programmes are also run at the Accra City Campus.
All programmes offered at the City Campus are non- residential.

  1. c.      Korle-Bu Campus

The Korle-Bu Campus is located three (3) kilometers from the Accra Central Business District and houses the College of Health Sciences.

  1. d.    Distance Education Regional Centres

The Distance Education programme is run by the School of Continuing and Distance Education, Legon and its ten (10) Regional Centres. As these programmes will be run in the regions, applicants will be given the opportunity to pursue a University of Ghana from the comfort of their homes. Programmes offered are:

  • Bachelor of Science in Administration programme
  • Bachelor of Arts programme
  • Bachelor of Science in Information Technology programme
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme (For professional nurses who already have a Diploma in Nursing from a recognized Nursing Training College). These professional nurses can remain at post while pursuing their degree programmes.

The Distance Education programme is nonresidential
 
1.     Qualifications acceptable for admissions include the following:

  • Senior Secondary School Certificates (SSSCE/WASSSCE)
  • Baccalaureate (French)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • GCE (Cambridge) – ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels
  • IGCSE (Cambridge) – ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels

  • Other external qualifications which have equivalences to the WASSSCE/SSSCE and the GCE (A Levels)

                   All admissions will be to Level 100.
 
3.     Minimum/General Entry Requirements

  • WASSCE/SSSCE Applicants

An applicant for admission to a degree programme in the University of Ghana must have at least credits (A1 – C6 in WASSCE and A – D in SSSCE) in English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science (for Science applicants) or Social Studies (for non-Science applicants) and three elective subjects in Science for applicants applying to Science or Agriculture related disciplines or three elective subjects in General Arts/Business for applicants applying to non-Science related disciplines, with the total aggregate not exceeding 24. In addition, Science applicants should have at least a grade C6 in WASSCE/D in SSSCE in Social Studies/Life Skills and non-Science applicants should also have at least a grade C6 in WASSCE/D IN SSSCE in Integrated Science/Core Science.

  • WASSCE/SSSCE Applicants from the West African Sub-region

An applicant for admission to a degree programme in the University of Ghana must have at least credits (A1 – C6 in WASSCE and A – D in SSSCE) in English, Core Mathematics and Biology or Agriculture and three relevant elective subjects, with the total aggregate not exceeding 24.

  • IGCSE/GCE (Cambridge) – ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels

Applicants must have at least five (5) credits passes including English and Mathematics at the IGCSE/Baccalaureate/Cambridge ‘O’ Level and three relevant subjects at the ‘A’ Levels.

  • International Baccalaureate (IB)

Applicants must have at least credits passes in three relevant subjects.

  • American High School Grade 12

An applicant for admission to a degree programme in the University of Ghana must have and a Final Grade Point of at least 3.0

Admissions will be to Level 100.

In addition, such applicants MUST have WASSCE/SSSCE passes in three (3) Core subjects and two (2) electives in the appropriate subjects or  credit passes in five subjects including English Language, Science and Mathematics at the GCE ‘O’ Level as well as passes in two subjects at the GCE ‘A’ Level.

  1.     i.    First Degree Holders:

An applicant with a Bachelor’s degree in Biological or Physical Sciences from a recognized University may be considered for admission on the recommendation of a special committee appointed by the Dean. The special committee shall vet the transcript of the applicant as well as course contents of the degrees, with a view to determine suitability of previous training and make recommendations to the University’s Admissions Board.

  1. ii.   Other Qualifications:
    1. Applicants in possession of Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) awarded by the University of Ghana with a minimum FGPA of 3.25 (Grade B) may be considered for admission to Level 200 of the B.Sc.(Medical Laboratory Science) degree programme. Applicants shall be required to attend a selection interview.
  1. Applicants in possession of the 3-year Post-Secondary Certificates in Radiography and Medical Laboratory Technology may be considered for admission to Level 100 of the B.Sc. (Diagnostic Radiography/Therapy Radiography) and B.Sc. (Medical Laboratory Sciences) degree programmes respectively. In addition, such applicants MUST have WASSCE/SSSCE passes in three (3) Core subjects and two (2) electives in science or  credit passes in five subjects including English Language, Science and Mathematics at the GCE ‘O’ Level as well as passes in two science subjects at the GCE ‘A’ Level. Applicants will be required to sit an entrance examination and pass an interview.
  1. Applicants in possession of a Diploma in Laboratory Science with a minimum FGPA of 3.25 (Grade B) may be considered for admission to Level 200 in Medical Laboratory Sciences. Applicants will be required to sit an entrance examination and pass an interview.

  • Bachelor of Public Health

The Bachelor of Public Health programme is designed with the view to develop capacity to improve the implementation of public health programmes and interventions. It is intended to help develop middle-level public health practitioners who will work at the district level and programme level in the Ghana Health Service and its Allied Institutions.
The undergraduate programme is also to offer opportunities for these middle-level health professionals to upgrade themselves and promote continuing professional development.
Applicants should have been recommended by the Ministry of Health (MOH)/ Ghana Health Service (GHS) to pursue the Bachelor of Public Health programme.

  2. Diplomas awarded by institutions other than those indicated in (i) above, may be considered eligible on recommendation by a special Committee. Shortlisted applicants shall be required to sit an entrance examination and attend a selection interview.
  3. Applicants would be credited with courses undertaken at the diploma level. All successful applicants will be admitted to Level 200.
  • Home Science (Family & Consumer Sciences)

An Applicant in possession of a Diploma with a B+ grade in any of the following areas is eligible to apply.

Applicants must be holders of a Diploma awarded by a recognized University, with a Final Grade Point Average (FGPA) of 3.25 or better.
                                     
This programme is open to applicants who have participated in the top-up programme since   AUGUST 2008. Applicants will also be expected to take an aptitude test at the University on the Saturday April 18, 2015 at 8.00 a.m. The deadline for applicants who have participated in the top-up programme to submit their on-line application form is Friday April 10, 2015.
 
Applicants will receive Index Numbers and venues for the examination immediately they successfully submit their applications on-line. They are expected to print out the information for their reference only. They are not to bring them to the examination centre.
 
Successful applicants will be admitted into the Bachelor of Science programme in Nursing at the university of Ghana.
 
                            Higher National Diploma (HND) to Degree Applicants

 

Holders of Higher National Diplomas (HND) from a recognized Polytechnic with a Final Grade Point Average (FGPA) of 4.00 or better (for Legon Campus and City Campus programmes) and 3.25 or better (for Distance Learning programmes) in any of the under-listed programmes, are eligible to apply to the SAME area of study, and where required, supported with one other subject in a related field, for admission.  In addition, such applicants MUST have WASSCE/SSSCE passes in three (3) Core subjects and two (2) electives in the appropriate subjects or  credit passes in five subjects including English Language, Science and Mathematics at the GCE ‘O’ Level as well as passes in two subjects at the GCE ‘A’ Level.
Applicants may be asked to write an entrance examination and/or attend an interview as part of the admission process. All HND holders will be admitted to Level 200 in the same subject area as their HND qualification
