About UHAS Department Of Medical Laboratory Science
Aims:
- To provide a firm grounding in the three basic sciences; Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biomedical Sciences, Mathematics, Numeracy and Quantitative Skills, and, Qualitative Writing Skills to all students who have gained admission to the University, through teaching and research for persons suitably qualified and capable of benefiting from such education;
- To disseminate knowledge, provide service and the results of research and their applications to the needs and aspirations of the people of Ghana;
- To encourage and to provide students with core fundamental scientific principles and reasoning, pre-clinical and other transferable skills and services, to contribute positively to improving the health status and overall quality of life, and foster partnerships with outside persons and bodies

- To work with integrity, apply fundamental scientific principles and maintain an empowering environment based on mutual trust, respect and partnership among academic and non-academic staff, students and external units.
- To apply innovative educational approaches and technologies, and the delivery of an excellent grounding in the basic scientific disciplines for health and allied health studies.
- To use modern information and communications technology and other educational tools to drive its programmes wherever possible.
- To seek through pedagogy, scholarship, research and service to be relevant to the health needs of Ghana and beyond; with future programmes relating to emerging challenges and trends in both the health and education sectors.
- To apply scientific ethos and be practically oriented in all areas of academic, health and community work. To extend the study of the basic sciences and quantitative education to the second cycle institutions in Ho, in the Volta region and beyond.
- To develop curriculum that entails effective balance between academic knowledge and competencies required in the world of work.
- To collaborate with the Ministries of Health and Education, Ministries, Departments and Agencies, professional bodies, the private sector and international institutions in the attainment of the mission of the University.
Programme Objectives
To train highly qualified medical laboratory professionals with strong theoretical and practical knowledge in the pathological sciences who are able to:
• Perform tests with a high level of accuracy, consistency, reproducibility and reliability.
• Adhere to strict national and international quality control systems.
• Develop proper supervisory skills and effective communication with colleagues within the health care service, patients and the general public.
• Communicate results and manage resources under minimum supervision with high efficiency.
• Demonstrate a clear understanding of the implications of the limits of their current scope of practice and what future possibilities abound.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the health care system, government policies and legal issues relating to their profession and its implications on their practice.
• Undertake basic research, provide technical assistance in research and show appreciation for research findings and ability to translate them into professional practice.
• Show commitment to a lifetime of learning and continuous professional development.
• Uphold patient dignity and confidentiality and show respect for patients choices.
Job Opportunities
There is great potential for employment now and this is likely to be better still with expansion in medical care provision and in laboratory services, and as new technologies develop and become available. Medical laboratory scientists work in hospital laboratories, clinical and reference laboratories, medical research laboratories, and private medical clinics and laboratories and forensic laboratories. They also find employment in medical equipment procurement and maintenance and the food processing and product manufacturing industries. An academic career is available with the Universities which offer training programmes in Medical Laboratory Sciences.
