About UCC Department Of Medical Laboratory Technology

The College was created in August 2014 by merging the UCC School of Medical Sciences, the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the Departments of Optometry (from the School of Physical Sciences), Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences (from the School of Physical Sciences) and the Department of Biomedical and Forensic Science (from the School of Biological Sciences)
Allied Health Science is a multidisciplinary branch of the health sciences involved with identification, evaluation and prevention of diseases and disorders.
It seeks to understand the body’s dietary, nutrition and rehabilitation needs and to manage health systems.
Allied health professionals include physician assistants, diagnostic medical sonographers, dieticians, medical laboratory technologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, radiographers, respiratory therapists, exercise physiologists, dental hygienists, and speech language pathologists, among several others.
It is estimated that allied health professionals provide for nearly 60% of all healthcare needs, working with doctors, or as independent practitioners.

MISSION
Our mission is to:
a) Provide medical and allied health education of the highest standards and value in Ghana, and the West African sub-region by blending internationally validated curricula with the unique healthcare needs of Ghana and Africa.
b) Produce high calibre medical practitioners and allied health professionals/scientists who will challenge conventional paradigms through innovative research, and yet be pragmatic, with an unwavering priority of advancing the immediate healthcare needs of ordinary people and communities, in Ghana and the West African sub-region.
c) Train medical and allied health practitioners, and researchers who are motivated to maintain excellence in all aspects of clinical, basic science, and community-based participatory research, adhering to internationally accepted principles of humane and ethical behaviour, conscious of the ethical, legal and social implications of genetic research, genomic sovereignty and intellectual property.
d) Train, mentor and provide opportunities for our students and teachers to become leaders who shape national and regional policies in health and technology to safeguard the health and wellbeing of ordinary people.
e) Develop outstanding flexible basic and continuing educational programmes, and quality assurance programmes that are recognised internationally, to serve the needs of aspiring and qualified allied health professionals and entrepreneurs, and government agencies in Ghana, and the West African sub-region.
f) Establish centres of excellence in research and service by seeking and maintaining the most advanced diagnostic and research technologies, and applying innovative approaches to advance knowledge in disorders that exact a major health burden on Ghana and Africa.
