University Of Pretoria Industrial Engineering

University Of Pretoria Industrial Engineering, The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Pretoria is the oldest and biggest Industrial Engineering department in South Africa. The first Industrial Engineers graduated from the University of Pretoria in 1963. Up to 1974 Industrial Engineering was offered as a program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 1975 the Department of Industrial Engineering was established as an independent academic department.

Over the past thirty plus years the Department
  • Produced university educated Industrial Engineers capable of serving a diverse range of manufacturing and service organisations in the pursuit of optimum productivity in the widest sense of the word.
  • Reliably continued to serve the University of Pretoria in an economically viable fashion.
  • Supported the School of Engineering by training other branches of Engineering in the probabilistic approach to problem solving.
  • Underwrote the mission of the Southern African Institute for Industrial Engineering in supporting and regulating the profession of Industrial Engineering.
  • Created and supported Industrial Engineering research at undergraduate and postgraduate level in developing the field of study.
  • Served as the driving force of the South African Journal of Industrial Engineering.
Through the Washington Accord, the equivalence of accredited degree programmes in signatory countries is acknowledged as having met the academic requirements for entry into the practice of engineering and subsequent registration as a professional engineer. At present the signatory countries are Australia, Canada, Ireland, Hong Kong, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States.

Academic Programmes

General Information
The University of Pretoria aims to be internationally competitive, while at the same time being locally relevant, this goal is supported by ensuring that the training and research programmes always meet the highest standards. The faculty is serious about ensuring that the market value of the degrees awarded by the University of Pretoria will always have a competitive advantage for its students. The faculty adds value to its degrees, making its students sought after.
At undergraduate level the department offers a four-year and five-year Bachelors degree in Industrial Engineering. At graduate level the department offers Honours, Masters and Doctoral degrees in Industrial Engineering to engineering graduates; and Honours, Masters and Doctoral degrees in Applied Science (Industrial Systems) to students with an appropriate BSc, BTech or other appropriate degree.
Our Bachelors degree programme is accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). A graduate from an accredited engineering programme is eligible for registration as a professional engineer after a minimum period of three years practical experience.
Being accredited implies that:

  • Our degree programme meets the educational requirement toward registration as a Professional Engineer;
  • Graduates from our programme are ready to enter engineering employment;
  • The standard of our degree programme is comparable to international degree programmes; and
  • The public is assured of the quality of our programme.

Postgraduate Programmes

Industrial Engineering postgraduate studies:
Industrial Engineers are generally responsible for the analysis, design, planning, implementation, operation, management and maintenance of integrated systems. These systems consist of people, capital, material, equipment, information and energy. The aim is to increase the productivity of the organisation and creating wealth.

There are three postgraduate study levels and each level has two study programme options:

1. Honours Level – Course Work:
1.1. BEngHons Industrial Engineering (12240012) – For students holding an Engineering undergraduate qualification
1.2. BScHons Applied Science Industrial Systems (12243002) – For students holding a relevant BSc or BTech undergraduate qualification

*Please NOTE that both above mentioned Hons programmes have a compulsory Research Module called BCS 780 ‘Industrial and System Engineering Research’ – Registered Hons students who meet with the pre-requisites must please ensure to attend the Information Session(s).
*A Video Recording of the Information Session is also available on this page, please scroll down to the bottom of the page.

2. Masters Level – Research Dissertation:
2.1. MEng Industrial Engineering (12250012) – For students holding an BEng Hons. postgraduate qualification
2.2. MSc Applied Science Industrial Systems (12253060) – For students holding a relevant BScHons. or BTechHons. postgraduate qualification
3. Doctorate Level – Research Thesis:
3.1. PhD Industrial Engineering (12263002) – For students holding a MEng postgraduate qualification
