Ug Students Have Spoken, How It All Went Down

Have the students of University of Ghana really spoken or the software has spoken? This was the question on the lips of many students after the provisional results were declared. The much awaited SRC 2015 elections came off not without some pocket of confusions within the early hours of the day. The whole confusion started when as at the scheduled 7:30 am start time for the election to, only students from the traditional halls were having their voting machines to commence the elections. All the halls in the diaspora actually started voting around 10:30 am instead of the supposed 7:30 am; and this wasn’t only the case since the situation was so bad that students from the Korle Bu campus of the University of Ghana commenced their voting at around 4:30pm due to the fact that their voting machines were not functions properly.
The rains also brought their ugly face around 12 noon and I must admit it gave me the beating of my life when I was on my way to Volta and the Vandal city to acquaint myself with the turn of events there. After the rain came the ugly incidents of breakdown of voting machines notably that of Volta Hall and Legon hall and also some pockets of disagreements and confusions in some of the voting centres including Limann hall, TF hostel, and Legon Hall among others and the alleged Common Wealth perchers trying to vote at the information centre where non-residence were voting.
The delay of the machine, the rain and the frequent breakdown of some of the voting machines forced the closing time for the election to be extended to 8pm. As they always say every long journey will surely come to an end, the 8pm benchmark was finally met and the results started flowing in thick and fast. I started receiving results from the diaspora where Fobi was given his compatriot a very good run for his money. This development wasn’t surprising though since everyone expected Fobi to pull great numbers in the diaspora leaving the main campus for serious competition.
Eye brows started raising when the results from the traditional halls were also slept by Fobi with a margin of about 75% in almost all the halls. The boys from the vandal city started “charging” and descending heavily in their numbers towards the SRC union building where the final declaration is to be made upon hearing that they lost Volta hall too with some sparkles of rumours as at that time that even the city on the hill (Common Wealth Hall) was won by Fobi. The crowd that converged in front of the union building in just some few minutes was really something I haven’t seen before in the history of Legon politics. Numbers cannot really be assigned since I will get it wrong any day. Weapons and others tool were in hand while the boys charging and driving home their message that they were never going to accept the result as it were. The crowd and confrontations grew so massively and quickly that the current SRC executives had to call the police from town to help.
The dean of students was called in around 11 pm to come and get some answers from the developers of the software used in running the election. The police later threaten to fire hot water and teargas into the massive crowd if they didn’t leave the union building in 15minutes. The crowd gradually varnished from the union building since they cannot stand about 5 police vehicles loaded with personnel’s with ammunitions.
The official result declaration will be done at 9 am on Friday 10 Apr. 15 in front of the union building but as it stands now the provisional results put Fobi in the lead with about 78% of the vote and team Fobi is already on a thank you tour.
